Bekoff 85-109
This bit of reading was very interesting to say the least. I do believe that animals play fair and are honest most of the time with each other. It is probable that animals communicate with each other, thus they have rules when they play games just like humans. Animals play all shorts of games all the time. Some might consider survival a game for most of them. Animals can be punished by allies and other animals by not getting to play with others. There is a mother for animals so its not like there own there own all the time. The bottom line is that I do believe animals have thoughts and moral rules just like humans and they act as civil as possible in having rules and consequences. The one subject about "fairness" for animals that is hard for me to understand is marriage. It seems that animals do not form relationships with the opposite sex very often. Most of the time the female is the dominant sex and the father is not a big part in the animals life. It is hard to think animals believe in marriage because they often mate with more then 1 animals and bread with others a lot of the time. However, I am one that does put humans on the top of the pedestal compared to other species because of the reality they we are the best combination of biggest, strongest, fastest, and most importantly smartest. Yes humans can be horrible people but it is still evident that we are better then animals.

I agree with you in that animals may have a code of conduct of sorts. When my two dogs play and nibble on one another if one gets too rough the offended animal will surely let the other know they have gone too far. If a lion pride, or wolf pack kills an animal they share the meat, but the most dominant and high status members of the group getting priority in the buffet line.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree that animals do not have thoughts and moral rules just like humans because as you later said, humans are superior. Primarily because we have spoken and written language humans can specifically set out the rules or acutely describe feelings and thoughts.
